Long Skirts

Long Skirts

I Love Leon red sweater, €105
Long skirt, $158
Antipodium long maxi skirt, £250
Le Silla black boots, $1,180
Diane von Furstenberg clutch handbag, £370
Samantha Wills chandelier earrings, $125

Being short, I have never really been able to bring myself to wear long skirts. Either they're about three feet longer than they're supposed to be or I just won't try them on for fear that I'll look even shorter. For someone who is regularly asked what high school they attend, this is not the kind of attention wanted. If you've read my previous posts you'll know that I regularly shop at stores like American Apparel and have been influenced by their styles. So once upon a time in L.A., I ventured into one of their shops and decided to face my fashion fear. And I loved it.

The trick isn't being taller, being thinner or being Gisele Bunchen, it's finding the right shape for your body. Obviously, staring at those posters of girls that are 5'9" and 110 pounds isn't going to make you look like them, and neither should you want to. If you can find the right form that brings out your attributes you're going to look fabulous. And bonus- there are store attendants that will help you do just that. Picture your body shape in your mind then imagine those pieces on you. This will give you a much better picture than what the mannequins can give you.

This is a great look for Fall, especially if you're sick of wear jeans but need coverage from those stiff breezes. Plus you don't have to worry about these bad boys flying up when you're wearing ugly underwear! So be afraid of maxis no longer!

Until next time, urbanistas.

Color Jeans

Color Jeans

Rebel Yell cropped t shirt, $69
AG Adriano Goldschmied skinny jeans, $159
Iron Fist platform wedge booties, $80
Alexander mcqueen clutch, £845
Lucy Peacock stud earrings, $30

Anyone that knows me associates my style with my ever-present black skinny jeans. Stumbling into Anthropologie the other day, I had a revelation. Non-black jeans can be cool. I know, I know. This style has been around for a while and I'm a little late for this train. However, my background in fashion has always been made up of black on black on black, maybe some grey, then red lipstick on top. I've only recently branched out into the world of color and prints so bear with me.

I proceeded to buy green and red pairs for a stupid amount of money that I'd rather not repeat, and have never looked back. Now I can't STOP wearing them. I've never really been a fan of the my-mom's-vintage-jeans-are-so-awesome-and-we-were-the-same-size-at-age-20-so-now-I-see-my-future trend. However, my fashion dabblings are typically '80s and 90's style-based so I can kind of see where the appeal is. Kind of. With the addition of these jeans, I'm on a whole notha level.

So color to your hearts content! Especially since it's Fall and everyone starts getting into study/depressed mode- the easiest solution for your mood is to wear bright colors! It works, promise. If not, be like Amy Winehouse and go back to black.

My Take on the Fashions of London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week is a little hit or miss for me this season. I'm really digging the "warrior" dress look that I'm seeing on the runways, as I've always been a big fan of mixing hard and soft items in an outfit. However there also seems to be a trend akin to school marm dresses. Not really on board with that one. I love high-waisted long skirts as much as the next girl, I mean hello I DO shop at American Apparel, but some of the color combos and accessories are a little much for my style. It's a little like the designers are beating it into us that YES I AM A LIBRARIAN AND I OWN LOAFERS AND SCRATCHY SWEATERS AND CATS AND SOMETIMES EAT LEAN CUISINES AT HOME ALONE. There are easy ways to make this workable though. I'm taking their "ready-to-wear" and turning into something us wee normal folk might actually be seen in.

The other trend I'm seeing is the shapeless-dress. For those of us with shapeless-bodies we usually look for things to imitate something close and/or similar to a feminine figure. Therefore I can't really call myself a fan.

I'm also kind of into this Asian-inspired look I'm seeing too. It doesn't really seem like anything that's been done before- almost like a play on samurai clothing or something. I can dig it.

Until next time, urbanistas.

Tights

Tights
Fall is my favorite time of year. That great transition weather between the face-melting heat of summer and the loss of toes due to frostbite in the winter. You can comfortably wear a cardigan and shorts or jeans with a tank top and not be cursing the temperature every step of the way. However, there are some fall fashions that make me want to slap somebody.

Tights. Everyone's got them. I own about a dozen pair myself. Unfortunately not everyone understands the rules imposed upon them when they decide to roll those suckers up their legs. I will only discuss one of those today because it is by far the most important and undoubtedly the most abused rule of all.

Cover your butt. Please. For all of our sakes. Unless you are Adriana Lima, no one wants to see that jiggling you've got going on. I'm really not sure what girls think when they put them on. Polka-dotted, zebra-striped whatever does not turn that two millimeter thick fabric into anything close to pants. Just tights as the only thing between the open air and your cellulite? Not ok. So please, add mini skirts, dresses, shorts, anything to complete the outfit. Whatever you do, make sure your junk is still in its trunk.

Leotards

Leotards

My new favorite thing: leotards.

I'm a fan of tucking in shirts to shorts/skirts/whatever to get that flowy look up-top and a sleek look on bottom. However, this is extremely annoying to fix throughout the day. Every time you sit down or sit up, do a cartwheel, etc. you must fix the outfit directly afterwards.

The solution? Leotards! I wear them all the time now. I know it's no new concept but until recently I've been very hesitant to try them out. Mostly thinking about how much of a pain in the butt it would be to go to the bathroom, etc. I love not having to worry about how my top is moving with my skirt because... it doesn't move. Another problem taken care of- worrying if said top is longer than the shorts/skirt you're wearing. This drives me nuts. And you also look like you're picking a wedgie every time you want to check. Not cute. Also? If you ever need a quick '80s workout outfit, just throw on some spandex pants underneath and call yourself Jane Fonda!

Boot Season

Boot Season

The most annoying thing coming out of a girl's mouth this time of year: "When is boot season!???"

Answer: Right meow. I don't know about you guys but I wear my boots all the time. What exactly is everyone waiting for? Is there some magical boot fairy that visits when a certain temperature hits? Or is it because your boots are full of sheep's wool, cause don't even get me started on the deplorable foot monstrosity that is Uggs. Fashion is about expressing yourself and finding new ways to do so. So boot up, girls!
